Many thanks to the Comox Valley Community Foundation for supporting our Healthy Food Program. With their help we were able to purchase a new commercial dishwasher and dishes to help us keep up with the increase in demand for this program!

Over the past year, CCSS served an average of 2,515 meals per month (up from 1,460/month the year before) and 22% of these were provided free of charge to students needing support. The program ensures that all Cumberland students have access to healthy food and nutrition. Children who are properly nourished are better learners with fewer behavioural problems.

Lunch Program participants are exposed to a variety of different foods, including a monthly salad bar, which helps them to establish a healthy diet. Students enrolled in the program share meals together providing an opportunity to develop friendships and social connections. The kitchen provides a safe space for children to get a snack, spend time and connect with a caring adult. Students routinely help with preparing meals and cleaning up, teaching them important life skills.

This program also provides valuable opportunities for local residents to volunteer and connect with children in their neighbourhood. Over the past year, 14 individuals contributed a total of 244 volunteer hours to this program.

We appreciate the generous support we receive from the local community. We look forward to another year filled with healthy food and smiling faces!
